    Just a PSA, there is absolutely no smell proof way of carrying your food (at least that you can reasonably bring backpacking). Think of drug dogs at airports, people have tried every conceivable way of masking odors of 'smelly things', and none of them can beat a dog. A bear's sense of smell is 10x better than those dogs. Those bags may reduce it, and maybe work for mice, but you still have to practice all the same food storage principles so it's not making a big difference either way.

    • @CC-en2lj
      @CC-en2lj 3 дня назад

      You have to try your best to keep majority of smells out of your gear etc. It’s super simple, if it reduces spreading smells to jacket in backpack, and yes bear smells it in bear canister… bears can smell if there is food or not in a location so they will go to bear canister anyways.

    If you have sensitive skin, mesh base layers are H-E-L-L. Merino wool is "soft" to people with no ability to detect stuff on their skin. It's softer than other wool, of course, but it's wool. And Wool, Merino and otherwise is H-E-L-L on skin. Like angry red, hives, and blisters.

    I'm surprised by the assertion that shoes don't need to be broken in and should "just fit" - I don't know anybody else that thinks that this is true, and no shoe-maker I've spoken to (at least for leather shoes) would agree. Of course leather needs to be broken in. And even for synthetic shoes, 7 years in the infantry, and 10 years of trekking since then, obviously have proven otherwise....

    • @MattShafter
      @MattShafter 10 дней назад

      @@dainiussileika2622 3 things … 1) If your toes are fighting with the leather, it’s not just the leather being impacted, your toes are being realigned too. Go look at the feet of babies and ANY society that doesn’t subject their feet to shoes. They’re shaped wayyyyyy differently 2) In the infantry, you have 1-5 option? In 1st world nations you literally have 100+ options 3) Synthetics are not like leather. I’ll assert again, “breaking in” is a thing that new people learn to say from old people and they never question if it’s true. Meanwhile, their pinky toes are curling under the next toe and their big toe should be pointing 5 degrees more medially and they have a sesamoiditis because of it.

This is just a temporary solution for now, but I do wear these if I’m doing super rocky trails… just too many ankle injuries to risk it.
